Down at the campground 2018 Wrangler JL Unlimited Sahara. These have been on sale for a while now and I’ve seen them on the road, but this is the first time up close. A few observations:

- I want one.

- From a distance these really don’t look too different from the JK. The biggest tell is the front fender vent. The bumpers are decently different too, but visually similar to the current Rubincon Recon and so many Wranglers have custom bumpers on them it’s hard to use as a visual cue. For some reason I didn’t really notice the new headlamps or turn signal locations until I was up close.

- I didn’t take too close of a look, but the interior appeared to be a huge improvement. This one had the tan leather seats and they looked fantastic.

- I don’t know how this compares in dimensions to the JK spec-wise but any growth appears to have been kept in check. It’s seems pretty close in size, which is fine because the JK was big enough.

- The door hinges are boss.

- Roof fit and body gaps seem much better than the JK.

- Love the wheels.

- I don’t know or care what the Jeep purists are saying about it, but with so many ways this redesign could’ve gone wrong Jeep really appears to have nailed it.

- Did I mention I want one?

Jeep could have done a lot worse with tarnishing the name and shape of the Wrangler. See: Cherokee and it’s smushed angry glary oven face.

Thankfully Wrangler enthusiasts won’t buy something that isn’t a Wrangler at its core.

My ideal somewhat affordable 2 car dream-garage would be a 2 door Sport-S(Don’t need the Rubicon) 3.0L Diesel with that sweet 260 horsepower and 442 pound/feet of torque

And a used C63 AMG sedan. Because M156

The fact that a modern vehicle has better visibility than its previous generation is mind blowing to me, and I also want one.

I too saw one today, in red. It was approaching me head-on so I didn’t realize it until I had processed that I’d seen the fender lights, at which point it was too late to look again.

The diesel should move the Wrangler pretty well, especially in 2-door form with less weight. I’m still not sold on the sound. One of my neighbors has both a Grand Cherokee and a Ram 1500 with that motor. (He also had two TDI VW’s beforehand they got boght back.) The GC is basically muffled to oblivion and the Ram has a pretty awful clatter. A scaled down Cummins I6 it most certainly is not.

And yeah I’d love a C63 of that generation as well!

Thankfully that’s the way thing are trending. Hopefully in 10 years we’ll be saying things like “2010 cars had the worst visability.”

The local Chrysler dealership buys their gas at my station so I got to see the first one that sold here. It was a silver Sahara unlimited, so about as “run of the mill” as a Wrangler gets. and it looked very nice. I agree that the interior is way better.
